UN General Assembly resolution of February 22nd 1993, World Water Day is officially celebrated on March 22nd of each year, and as such requires public attention at local, national, regional and international levels.
Marking of World Water Day is one of the ways to globally, in the spirit of sustainable development, raise awareness about the importance of water management for the present, but also future generations, and also to appeal for help for a large part of the world’s population which, unfortunately, for many reasons do not have drinking water. By selecting a specific topic, each year seeks attention is drawn to individual segments of water issues.
The theme of World Water Day in 2015 is “Water and Sustainable Development”. The concept of sustainable development today has a central place in reviewing long-term prospects of survival and progress of mankind. Sustainability, or sustainable development, occurs not only as a prerequisite, but also as the ultimate goal of effective organization of a number of human activities on Earth.
Perhaps the most important factor for sustainable development of is water. Water resource is is strategically important in poverty reduction, economic development and sustainability of ecosystems.
Water contributes to the improvement of living standards and the common good of society all the way from process of food production and energy, it’s use in industrial processes to protection of plant, animal and human population from the harmful effects. Water potential of Bosnia and Herzegovina obliges us to rational and responsible management.
After oxygen, water has the second most vital importance to our organism. Of all the substances in our body the most of it is water, which is an essential ingredient for controlling all the important processes in our body. In adult normal weight person water makes up more than 60% of body weight, in newborns water makes up to 75% of body weight. Women compared to men have more body fat and lower weight percentage of water.
Water is important for the health
It is a known fact that water is constantly being lost from our body, and that this loss must be compensated. However, many people do not understand the importance of water in everyday nutrition and how it affects our health, and do not enter the recommended daily dose.
People must take at least 6 to 8 glasses of 2 dl water a day (or a number of glasses of 2 dl = number of kilograms of body weight divided by 8). It is advised that the total daily fluid intake is 2/3 water. Since water is the most accessible and cheapest remedy, its regular intake can not be ignored.
